Spare a Thought…

As we go into the final furlong of our promotion push, (albeit not decided yet), I would like to spare a thought for Luton fans this morning. The joy of winning at wembley must have dimmed a little, as the almost inevitable was confirmed yesterday when they were relegated.

Luton were one of the founding teams of the Premier League and had spent almost 90 years as a league side. I have mentioned before that one of my work colleagues is a Luton fan, so I have watched their season with interest. Could they pull off the impossible? No they couldn’t, but they had a damn good go.

They don’t have a large squad, and they are young. However under the ex Blues hero Mick Harford, they have given all for the cause – and played they hearts out for the club. My work colleague said that they have played in an attacking format most of the season, needs must I guess – the down side of that of course, is that you can get beaten too. The 30 points deficit was always going too be much.

Despite that, Lutons performance this season has been admirable. They have won 13  so far this season, drew 15 and 14 defeats. Of course with that record they would be comfortable. I’m not sure of the exact number, but they have only lost 4 or 6 games since December – a terrific performance from a team at the bottom.

Nick Owen was on R5 Live this morning, and I have to say he has conducted himself with real integrity and grace, despite his obvious disappointment, (or stronger!), of the decision makers. I was thinking about this, I don’t believe for one moment that a club in the Premier league from 15th upward would EVER get treated like Luton have, (West Ham anyone?). Yes they probably deserved a points deduction – but the amount was just madness.

I really hope the club can keep the nucleus of the side and of course the manager. I will be hoping they get promoted at the first ask, however it has to be said – that league is beginning to collect sides that have tasted league football, so it won’t be easy.

Keep your hats on you hatters – hope to see you back soon.

Thanks Kev; it has been surreal season with the points deduction.
I can only really follow whats been going on living down in Cornwall although I have managed to get to a few games including the final last week – the proper town supporters have been great all year and will I hope continue to turn out in large numbers next year.
As always it is the smaller clubs that seem to suffer while the FA looks after only the top of the premier league.
Best wishes for the final push over the next couple of weeks; I look forward to seeing you on Match of Day again next season.

May I add my commiserations to those already proffered? Like many, I suspect, I will be keeping an ear out for Luton’s results next season. I’ve just written an article on this blog around the subject of injustice and this is another I would like to see righted and soon! Good luck for next season all Hatters fans :-)
