Best Blues Players Part 4
Aug 4th, 2009 | By Aylesburyblue | Category: Aylesburyblue Articles, Blues News, PollsWell that’s the defence sorted. Joe Gallagher will be partnered by Kenny Cunningham who just sneaked in ahead of Matthew Upson. Now we need some attacking players so let’s start with the wide men. You can select two from these chaps.
Stan Lazaridis
1999-2006, 191 total appearances, 8 goals
Australian Stan joined us from West Ham and played seven seasons including all of our first stint in the Premier league. I always remember how the crowd would lift every time he got the ball and started a run down the left to cries of “C’mon Stanley”. Not a prolific scorer but they were usually good ones.
Gordon Taylor
1970-76, 166 total appearances, 9 goals
Gordon Taylor OBE joined Blues after eight years with Bolton Wanderers. Signed for only £15,000 his arrival coincided with a revival of fortunes for the club and he supplied many a good ball for the likes of Hatton, Latchford and Burns to put away. He is now the chief executive of the PFA.
Peter Ndlovu
1997-2001, 77 total appearances, 23 goals
Zimbabwe’s all time leading scorer he also played a number of games up front where he scored some memorable goals. A real fan favourite
Paul Devlin
1996-98 & 2002-03, 110 total appearances, 32 goals
Birmingham born he had a couple of spells with Blues. A regular goalscorer he got our first ever Premier League goal against Leeds in 2002.
Jon McCarthy
1997-2002, 142 total appearances, 8 goals
Joined as a flying winger for £1.5million he offered an attacking threat but would also get back and help out in defense. Two broken legs stopped him contributing more.
Alex Govan
1953-58, 187 total appearances, 60 goals
A speed merchant, Govan, a left winger, scored five hat-tricks in the 1956-57 season, including three in four games in a remarkable ten-day spell. He was also reportedly responsible for us adopting “Keep Right On” as the team song.
Len Boyd
1949-56, 282 total appearances, 14 goals
A trustworthy winger who captained the mid-1950s side to the second division title and the FA Cup Final in 1956. He was hard-working, combining industry with composure and skill on the ball.
Robert Hopkins
1983-86 & 1989-91 205 total appearances, 33 goals
“Hoppy” was an aggressive left winger who, and a cult hero despite coming through the ranks at Aston Villa. One of several rugged yet talented characters in the Ron Saunders’ team of the mid-1980s who won promotion from the second division. Was part of the team that won the Leyland Daf Cup in 1991.
Malcolm Page
1964-81, 391 total appearances, 10 goals
True club servant who, who appeared in every outfield position for Birmingham in his 17 years at St Andrew’s. Recognised as a reliable and useful defender he also played a lot at right back but as I missed him out there I’m including him for his time at left midfield.
