Liverpool v Birmingham City My Brief Post Match Thoughts

Liverpool 2 Birmingham City 2

Before the match I thought we might get a point, (well my heart said), my head a defeat – so I’m happy with a point from Anfield although we COULD have had all 3.

Our resiliance tonight was fantastic. Dann and Johnson were awesome AGAIN and Hart put in a terrific performance after a couple of below par performances. He was unfortunate with the 1st goal, he pulled off a wonderful save just before it.

Despite going behind, we fought back well – and Chucho finally has bagged his first goal for us. Then we went on and went ahead with a FANTASTIC goal. Jerome, where on earth did that come from!

I said on the forum that we had to survive 15 minutes without conceding, which we did, however to be fair Liverpool completely dominated the 2nd half. As a result it was frustrating to concede the equaliser in the way that we did. The decision was a poor one – N’gog dived, however to be fair to the ref I think he didn’t have a clear view.

I can’t deny that Liverpool deserved a point, and maybe even going on to win it – however over all our endeavour and commitment earned us a point.

Well done Blues – well done Alex.

Having been annoyed that MK was dropped, I must say that JH had a faultless game. Well done & I hope he can go on from here. The team is a TEAM; it might not yet have enough creativity but they really are playing for the manager. He deserves it & so do we.

    Great comment Alan.

Liverpool certainly played well tonight, and I expected nothing less. The quality throughout their side is clear to see, even without Torres and Gerrard.

They would have thoroughly deserved a point or three tonight – had they scored fair goals. However, they had to rely on the cheating N’Gog to get anything out of the game.

As a result of the blatant dive, and subsequent penalty conversion by the man who will no doubt be hailed the ‘hero’ in the morning rags despite doing little, I have been left feeling as if we have lost two points as opposed to gaining one.

We now have to look to the, usually lax, FA to make an example of this blatant cheat by imposing a ban on the player and asking the referee to attend the next Specsavers sale.

No relation to Alan Richards below.

Don’t blame ref Walton he didn’t have the greatest view as Carsley was between him and Ngog but that said if in doubt should he have erred on Blues side. What is once more apparent is that it is time for video back up and a video ref in the stands to rule on contentious decisions. But as long as that idiot Blatter is in charge at FIFA we can forget it. Look at all the other major sports that use it successfully. There is too much at stake in today’s Big Money environment, ut was different years ago but not today.

Andrew – I couldn’t agree more about the need for video replays and have just this second finished a lengthy forum post on the matter here:

Good Post on the forum Kaje. Pity the poster who replied didn’t realize that NFL games have always taken up to 4 hours. Video challenges have added about 10 extra minutes to the 4 hours. Don’t forget it’s the club who gets unjustly relegated that suffers not just the manager and team but all the back room staff etc etc etc and all the ancillary businesses that employ people who service the club. Video to ensure fairness is now a necessity.

Being a fan of NFL, I had to chuckle at that post too!

I can’t see how, or why, FIFA can continue to deny the introduction of such simple and inexpensive measures that would make the game fair for all.

If I was a conspiracy theorist, though I’m not….honest…., I would suggest that it’s because of an agenda in football to ensure certain teams (who seem to always be given such decisions in their favour) are, in some way, given an advantage in games regardless of their apparent gulf in ability.

Though, as I’m not a conspiracy theorist….yet, I’m sure it’s just because they are an archaic organisation that is rooted firmly in the past with the stereotypical OAP technophobia!

  9. Kaje says:

Though for the record, NFL has four 15 minute quarters – though the introduction of video replay technology barely increases that time at all!

  10. Again your heart sinks in despair for the smaller club when a somewhat dubious decision by the ref is given in favour to the bigger club and results in a penalty been given. There is no doubt that Carsley did not even touch Ngog. It’s a sad state of interaction when players may as well take up swimming than to play an honest game of football. The refs judgment is shocking in this case and completely wrong but he just goes with what he sees- obviously not that much. Liverpool were the stronger side the first half but that seemed to fade away in the second. Birmingham’s set piece was top notch to set up Benitez and the cracker by Jerome; you just can’t get much better than that from 30 odd yards out, brilliant. Okay the pressure was applied by Liverpool in the final minutes but Birmingham held on. Whether or not Liverpool deserved the draw with their over-all performance is debatable but to get it the way they did is shameful. As for Birmingham they can go away – yes gutted and robbed but at least with their heads held high in going to Anfield and getting the draw. Can Liverpool do the same – not a chance!
