Twenty Points at Christmas

Nov 15th, 2009 | By Aylesburyblue | Category: Aylesburyblue Articles, Blues News

For as long as the league has been in operation twenty points at Christmas has been the marker that indicates whether a side will stay up. That of course assumes that forty points are required at the end of the season but in most years that has not been the case. Often thirty six points is enough. However it’s still a good target to aim for and with our upcoming fixtures one that is very achievable. So far we’ve been averaging a point a game despite three-quarters of our games being against top half sides. Our next six games are all against sides currently in the bottom half of the table. They are,

Fulham, West Ham and Blackburn at home.

Wolves, Wigan and Everton away.

Can we get eight points from that lot. I would think so but it would be very Blues to slip up against the lesser sides after having done so well against Man City and Liverpool. In our last Premiership campaign we got more points against Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham than we did against Derby, Fulham and Reading!

Obviously the home games are key and we should be targeting two wins there but that game at Molineux is huge. By the time the game kicks off Wolves will probably be 19th and a few points adrift of safety (They’re next game is at Stamford Bridge) so will be desperate for the three points. A draw would be a great result for us and I would take that at Wigan six days later. Everton away will depend on which Everton turns up and who they have fit but I wouldn’t bank on us getting anything there.

So seven points at home and two away will give us twenty-one at Christmas and a great platform to push on in the the new year, hopefully with a few quality additions. Is that being too optimistic or do you think that we can get more than that?

What does everybody else think?

yes it is possible but on a positve note all those games are winnable

The biggest problem is complacency. We have just had 3 pretty good performances and picked up 5 points. Our worse enemy will be ourselves thinking that Fulham will be a gimmie.

Hopefully Mcleish will be re-focusing the squad and we go into saturday’s game with the right attitude.

    I think we’ll get 8 points.

On the basis that there are no easy games in the Prem, I wouldn’t be surprised if we lose one of those 3 home games and lose 2 of those 3 away games.

So, two wins and a draw from the next 6 games would still get us to 19 points by Xmas – which should be enough to give us a great platform to sign some new quality players and push on in the New Year.

    Absolutely.

The way things sit at the moment; there is no way I would have even dreamt 5 points from Sunderland, Man City, Liverpool. We seem to have found a nice bit of form, players worried about their positions with new blood on the horizon. Reasons to pull their socks up…and they have done. If they can impress now then they might not get the chop and be old to the likes of Cardiff or Newcastle. Lets see it continue please.

We’ve hit a nice bit of form and if we can keep everyone fit why shouldn’t we target to remain unbeaten over the next six games. A tall order I know but it is possible. However we should be good enough to get ten points which would put os 22 points from 18 games. The trouble is this is Blues so who knows.
