Dave Small of the fanzine Zulu, has done a quick report on Lee Carsley’s recent visit to the Oast House.

It was packed at the Oast House for the visit of Lee Carsley, and Lee kicked the evening off by telling us about his career with Derby County, Everton and Blues.

He said it was wonderful for a local lad (Sheldon) to be made Captain. We then had a long question and answer session among them was, how did you feel when Ngog of Liverpool dived. He told us he was nowhere near him and his first reaction was to give him a slap. He added that sadly that’s the way the game has gone now with foreign players in the game – they have turned diving into an art form.

When he was asked about the sacking of Mark Hughes, he clearly felt that Hughes was hard done by. When asked if he had ever played under a foreign manager, his reply brought the house down – he simply replied, Alex McLeish!

Lee also spoke about Benetiz and of his work rate. He said it is very much appreciated by his team mates, and that he his taking English lessons. He reckons that as soon as he finds the net a couple of times, there will be no stopping him. He also confirmed that the target for this season is survival.

He also told a disappointed audience that he may be up for transfer in January when the transfer window opens as he’s 35 and his best is behind him. We’ll be sorry to see him go.

According to one of today’s Newspapers Mick McCarthy is interested in him. I wonder if that’s why he defended Mick when asked about putting the reserves in against Manchester United – although I think he’s an up front guy.

The fans broke out with an inspiring chorus of Keep Right On as his interview closed. It had been a night to remember.

Dave is responsible for Zulu Fanzine, the sometimes controversial publication available on match days. Dave explains:

I been producing the Zulu fanzine since 1996 and is going from strength to strength. It is never afraid to call it how I see it and is not for those who are easily offended or those of a nervous disposition and I’ve been arrested twice!

Through the Zulu I have met many former football stars and spoken to them at length. These include Kevin Beattie, Stan Bowles, Alvin Martin, Malcolm McDonald – who I have appeared on television with on more than one occasion. There are also ex-Blues players that I have met and spoken with. These include Paul Devlin, Paul Tait, Robbie Savage and Geoff Horsfield, Ian Clarkson and Robert Hopkins.

Yes editing the Zulu has been most rewarding. it has opened doors for me that are closed to many fans.
