5 Months On…

Mar 26th, 2010 | By | Category: Blues News, Matches, Players

This was a post put on our forum by azzagatecrasher one of our forum members. He posted it last week – but I thought it was worthy of a blog.

This time in October Blues had just lost their third game on the bounce, away to Arsenal, while this loss was no less than expected the previous two games warranted many reasons to be extremely worried as bluenoses. An extremely bad performance at home to Bolton, followed up by an equally poor performance away to Burnley lefty us a mere 2 points above relegation and everyone’s favourites to go down.

Not helping matters were the fans growing animosity towards Big Eck, non more so than in the home game against Bolton whereby constant chants of 4-4-2 could be heard from the crowd leaving many questioning (myself included) whether or not Alex was indeed the right man for the job….

Skip forward 5 months and things look completely different. After that game against Arsenal Alex then lead the team to our record unbeaten run in the top flight, at one point even winning 5 games on the bounce, a remarkable achievement for a team like us in the top flight. It’s also worth noting that despite since having lost these losses have only came away from home and at St. Andrews the team still remains unbeaten since that home game against Bolton. Chelsea, United, Man City, Spurs and Everton have all tried, and failed to leave St Andrews with maximum points in this time, a feat that many teams would love to boast.

This remarkable run has lead us to a comfortable top half position (in fact a quick look at the past tables show that we have in fact maintained our top half position since the Wigan game on the 5th December) and has allowed us to reach the “magic” 40 points mark with many a games to spare, all but confirming our premier league status next year. Now with 9 games remaining, and 27 points to play for, we find ourselves an equal amount of points from top of the table as we do the final relegation places (20). And in that run we also reached the FA cup quarter finals, falling only 90 minutes away from Wembley … still there’s next season eh?

Although it now looks as though 7th place, and a European spot could be just out of our grasp, anything is possible and with only 6 more points needed to equal our best ever points total in the premier league this season is far from over. But at least for once we can sit back, relax, and enjoy the end of season run in knowing that we need not rely on other teams losing in order to maintain our position in the top flight and that we can look back on our season and reflect upon what can only be viewed as a job expertly done by both the team, and the back room staff.

Here’s to next season, one that for once we can look forward to with optimism, I for one am looking forward to the ride.
