The Big Man has Landed!
May 26th, 2010 | By Aylesburyblue | Category: Aylesburyblue Articles, Blues NewsToday we wrapped up our first big signing of the summer with the capture of Serbian International Nikola Zigic from Valencia. Now I know that we signed Ben Foster earlier but this is a signing that will bring something extra to the side. With his size he will give us an extra dimension that the other strikers don’t provide. I’m sure that Cameron Jerome will be pleased to no longer have to get on the end of his own flick ons. Obviously I hope we don’t resort to ‘lumping it up to the big man’ football but it’ll be good to have some one up front to hold the ball up and bring others into play. It’s also great to see the signing wrapped up so quickly. At this time of the year transfers can go on for weeks.
So what do we know about Nikola Zigic. Well he’s 29 and has 42 caps for Serbia for whom he has scored 16 goals. He has been their player of the year three times although the most recent was four years ago. He was signed by Valencia for a big fee but hasn’t done that well there. He did better while on loan to Racing Santander and has a good goalscoring record generally. He is in the Serbian squad for South Africa so will be the only Blues player at the World Cup. We can watch him up against Australia, Germany and Ghana with the first match being on Sunday 13th.
I’m genuinely excited about this signing as it’s the type of deal we wouldn’t have done last year. Now we need to sign a winger or two to provide the service. N’Zogbia would be good. I can see the headlines now “Zig and Zog stuff Villa”.

I am very excited about this.
Well done Alex (again). As smart a deal as one could expect. I didn’t think he could pull this off. Before the world cup, so his price doesn’t rocket, a decent price and quality player. Being greedy, I would love to see Nzogbia now to supply the ammo for him. But lets not get too carried away for next year, theres still a big effort needed to match this season. Don’t forget most other clubs will also be strengthening their squads.
agree with article and coments …….. i hope we dont go to route one ……….. i read that he is stronger than crouch … thats gonna be some spectacle when we play spurs !!!!!!!
It’s good to have a big man up front , of that there is no doubt , He looks a ‘ handfull’ on youtube , if a little ungainly , but when you’re 6’8″ you can’t exactly be a ‘twinkle toes ‘ can you?
Although in Crouch’s case he is rather delicate of foot.
Zigic looks like a player that will ‘ connect ‘ more often than not with quality balls into the box. Let’s just hope that quality service is there!
the fact that teams like liverpool, chelsea and spurs were after zigic says it all really. we need a right winger now because larssons to inconsistent (not to mention hes to fussy with his contract) and i think mcfadden should play right side to cut in and have mcgeady out on the left wing. We will be european quality if that happens defo
N’Zogbia is a must… He is and always was our main target lets just hope we get him.
I think him and Koncheskey will be our last big signings and we might get 1 or 2 more for cover

Great signing. Just as an extra, go to youtube and type in his name, there are some good clips showing the guy in action. He looks very assertive and confident. Looking forward to seeing him play.
Just need an exciting winger to add to the mouth-watering prospect of next season.

agreed , we now have a beanpole striker too
This is great move from BCFC, you are getting top20 striker in Europe, mark my words, he just didnt get any chance in Valencia… 6mil for Zigic is a steal
I wanted him to sign for United and play again with his good friend Vidic but…
Vidic and Zigic duel next year will be colossal, cant wait for it… Expect assists and good defensive skills as well as goals, Zigic has to be guarded by two defenders, and that will make space for Jerome…
Good luck next season, I wish you Europa League place
Fantastic signing! Real statement of intent from ‘Sir Alex’ and our Board and very efficiently dealt with in double-quick time. Almost pinching myself that this could be Blues………It’s all gone a bit quiet in Witton ain’t it…?!!!
P.S Thanks Predrag – hope you guys have a great World Cup and Nikola scores plenty of goals for you!
Great signing but it will be interesting what formation McLeish wants to play. I get the impression he wants to go 4-5-1 with the players he’s after. For that to work we have to have pace down the flanks either from midfield or from full back or both; qualities which we lack. He has tried Jerome out wide before (heaven forbid!) which may be in his thinking. Like most, I prefer 4-4-2 especially at home and I hope my intuition is wrong. As for next season, I’ll be happy with a similar placing to this year; any better will be a bonus.
