England’s number 1 – Foster v Hart

Today Ben Foster has withdrawn from the England squad with a back injury, which is a shame for him with the England goalkeeper jersey up for grabs after the World Cup. However the squad picked by Mr Capello showed that Blues had a massive influence on the position with our current and last season’s club number 1 goalkeepers going head to head for the shirt (or should that be gloves?)
This prompts the question who is better? Well I as well as I’m sure many fans shed a tear when we waved goodbye to Joe Hart after what can only be described as a brilliant season. A rock at the back behind a solid defence, but when they were breached I was never worried. That has never happened before as we’ve all had our moans about ex goalkeepers, be it staying on their line, not catching balls from corners or coming off their line too often, there was always a slight concern.
This just wasn’t the case with Hart as he had pretty much the perfect season. But he was never ours and as the season went on it became pretty clear he would be going back to Man City. Funnily enough as we speak there is a massive battle between him and Shay Given to see who starts on Saturday, with the man losing out sure to be knocking on the manager’s door for a move.
So with all the uncertainty around Hart’s future we decided to plump for Ben Foster a good goalie suffering from a lack of games at Man Utd. A shrewd move by Mcleish in my opinion. Yes he has made high profile mistakes at Old Trafford but I think to be a Man Utd goalie is a completely different ball game. With Man Utd keeping possession as well as they do and with a world class defence in front of you, you have to stay switched on when you are maybe out of the game 89mins. This Ben struggled with and obviously he won’t have this problem at St Andrews. Look at when Foster was on loan to Watford, man of the match every other week, player of the season awards and the reason Watford did as well as they did while he was there, a firm fans favourite if you ask any Hornets fan. We have a solid defence in front of him but teams will create chances against us and I’m pretty confident Foster will show the form of his Watford days, rather than repeat those mistakes against Man City and Sunderland.
As for Hart only time will tell if he can repeat the fantastic form from last season, or indeed if he actually can dislodge Given. But I think if he does leave it would benefit him to go to a team where he will play regularly and get plenty of action. We only have to look at the form of David James and Paul Robinson as to playing consistently brings a consistency to their performances. I think that Foster will be great this season and lets not forget, he is our player so we have no worries when he starts to play out of his skin, unlike last season!

We can’t underestimate the Job Dave Watson is doing at Blues. An unsong Coaching hero in my opinion; he worked with JH, who’s confidence was probably low at MC, and honed him into the star he was for us last season. Even JH stated this in some of his interviews earlier this year. Now, if he does the same thing with arguably a better Keeper in BF, I can see us struggling to keep hold of him as the “bigger” clubs will come sniffing or even an international berth might be on the cards. I STRESS I hope not, we want to keep him for ourselves!! But, as mentioned, an unsung coaching talent IMO. KRO!!
