Wolves v Birmingham City FAC 3rd Round Replay Brief Post Match Thoughts

I had great seats for this game, having tidied up the lounge! I wondered before hand if we might win, we are beginning to hit form at the right time. We grabbed a late point at Peterborough and since then we’ve looked like we want to win the games we’ve played since.

As the game unfolded, I felt we dominated midfield but we weren’t creating chances – however we created more than Wolves. I thought they were poor. Yes I know they made 10 changes, however we were 4 or 5 short of 1st choice too. I thought Mutch was terrific, and although he did fade, as he gets match fit – will be a real asset for us in the middle.

Elliott is getting better too. He worked really hard in that sort of free role, and made a real menace of himself. One criticism is that I am thinking more and more that Rooney is out of his depth. He had a great chance to score in the 1st half but inexplicably didn’t shoot, he works hard but doesn’t seem to have the composure.

However all round the rest of the side there were good performances. A special mention to Doyle, (ours not theirs – theirs was poor!), he only had to make 3 saves and did that despite not doing very much at all besides clearing pass-backs. Well played Colin.

We had the better chances through the game, Spector shot just wide at the end of the 1st half. We kept getting behind them and in the 2nd they did step up the tempo a bit, but I always felt that would help us and after great work from Beausejour, (who survived despite heading the head of Murphy. There aren’t many who WOULD survive that!), sorry I was saying – Beausejour’s great work resulted in the ball almost being turned in by Wolves. From the corner the ball was hit against the post by Elliott who fell down, the ball bounced out and then in again and Elliott stuck it in from the floor on the deck.

Wolves had one more chance, and that was Doyle’s best save effectively a double save.

Shots on the TV of grumpy Wolves fans and a VERY cross Mad Mick were amusing, but Wolves fans – you’d be better focusing on staying up anyway.

As for Blues, still unbeaten in 2012. Come on you Blues!

So much of the media are saying it was a dreary match. It’s as if they have made up their mind beforehand. I thought a lot of the game from Blues’ point of view was encouraging. I don’t like to make negative remarks about Blues’ players, but apart from Rooney who tried but is out of his depth at this level, we had a lot of successes. Mutch was excellent, Gomis was good & the defence was solid apart from a few balls behind Murphy. A special word for Colin Doyle; on this performance & the last, he is at least as good as Boaz Myhill and is our own player.

I watched it with the sound off and was most impressed with the tidyness and purpose of Blues play. The team kept its shape well, and even when down to 9 men didn’t panic and indeed caused Wolves problems. Only complaint is that too often the final ball was speculative, ineffective or untidy which undid all the good work which preceeded it. With the two main strikers rested, this was a good evening’s work overall – but I would like to see a bit more goal lust from Rooney & co.

  3. Interestingly, Wade Elliott paid tribute to Adam Rooney on Radio WM interview. Certainly, as Elliott said, he deserves a HUGE amount of credit for single handedly (pretty much) attacking a Premier League back for in two matches, without even a sniff of being substituted. Not scoring IS a problem for all strikers, but then so is a lack of confidence, and when you know the boss will be using King and Zigic on Saturday, there was nothing to gee up his performance. I think he did a great job of harrassing their defence, he didn’t rest, he got in their faces, chased into the touchline. A well deserved win, and – on this evidence – I’m looking forward even more to Saturday. A mate of mine is a Watford fan, and it was refreshing to hear him say he’s dreading the game. KRO
