Dave Mackay

Former Blues boss Dave Mackay has passed away aged 80. Mackay was manager at one of the darkest periods in the club’s history between 1989-1991. Blues were in the third tier but Mackay was unable to get the club promoted. However, he did have success as manager guiding Derby County to the title.

Putting that aside, Mackay will be remembered as a no nonsense hard as nails player! That description is surely deserved for anyone who took Billy Bremner on!

DM

He was part of the Spurs side that won the double in 1961 and the Cup Winners Cup in 1963. He saw further success with Spurs in the 1960’s with two more FA Cup medals. Cloughie described him as Spurs greatest ever player.

Although his impact on Blues wasn’t that memorable, he did have a connection and because of his talent as a player, I felt he deserved recognition here.

RIP Dave Mackay.

  1. RIP Dave Mackay. Anyone who really laid into Lee Clark or even recently gave Gary Rowett stick over team selection has no concept of how hard Dave Mackay’s job was. A man with great credentials who tried to give our great club the revival it needed. Rest In Peace Dave.

  2. He’s always remembered as a ‘hard man’, and indeed he was, but he was also a marvellous player. At Spurs he was a defensive wing half, what we’d call a box to box player, I suppose. Moved into the back four when back fours were invented.

  3. The situation was bad at Blues when Dave Mackay took over and arguably worse than it is now so it was understandable that he struggled with the job. The whole club at that time was a shambles and the stadium was rundown.
    RIP D. MACKAY

  4. I was at every game during Mckays reign and by the end to a man the crowd screamed for his sacking. Time for reflection maybe. Football is not that important and he didnt deserve the abuse that came his way. God bless R.I.P
