Who’s going to be the top marksman?
Well we are out of the cup and there’s still a quarter of the league season to go but goal scoring remains a problem. The failure to sign a striker in January could well be telling. It looks like whoever ends up our leading scorer this year will do so with under ten goals but who do you reckon that is going to be. The current standings including cup goals are,
Lee Bowyer 6
Cameron Jerome 5
Seb Larsson 4
James McFadden, Christian Benitez, Kevin Phillips, Liam Ridgewell 3
So while the total might not be great, who do you think will end up Blues top scorer. Vote in the poll on the right.
In our last poll only 15% correctly predicted that we wouldn’t get further than the quarter final with almost double that thinking we would win it. That’s what optimism does for you..
How far can we go?
We are now in the quarter finals of the cup for the first time since 2006 (Let’s not dwell on what happened then) so is this our year. Obviously a lot will depend on this afternoon’s draw but how confident are you that we can go all the way? Vote in the poll on the right.
In our last poll the majority suggested we should wait to the summer rather than pay inflated transfer fees which is exactly what the manager did. I wonder if he reads this.
Splash the Cash?
There have been a lot of stories in recent days about bids that we have reportedly put in for big name players but some of the fees asked for are ridiculous. £10million plus for Kenwyne Jones!!!
It’s well known that prices are always inflated in January especially when your chairman tells the world that you have up to £40million to spend. Added to the fact that we are in a much better position than we could have expected to be should McLeish keep the chequebook in his pocket. On the other hand we do still have a thin squad and a few injuries would leave us down to bare bones.
So what do we do? Pay the inflated fees or wait till the summer?
In our last poll the majority thought we would finish between 11th and 14th but 12 people still thought we would be relegated.
7th at Christmas. Where will we end up?
Our new poll is a simple one. Where will Blues finish? We all agree that our current league position is far ahead of our expectations at the beginning of the season but can we keep it going or will we “Do a Hull”? I would expect us to drop down the table a bit but see no reason why with the right signings in January we can’t finish around 10th. That would equal are highest ever Premiership finish and be an amazing achievement.
In our last poll 70% wanted us to spend our money on a striker with 20% hoping for a left back. Let’s hope we can get both in January.
Lots of Rumours But Who Do We Need?

The opening of the January transfer window is just a few weeks away and I would expect that Alex McLeish already has a number of players in mind to strengthen the squad. Hopefully the club can do the business early so we are not all avidly watching Sky Sports News at 11.30 on 31st January to see if the big deal can be closed.
There are of course a lot of rumours flying about which range from the obvious links to the more adventurous targets. In the former category are anybody from Rangers and we have been linked with Kris Boyd and Steven Davis. Of the two I would prefer Davis as I don’t think Boyd will make the step up from the SPL. In the latter category are some strikers that have also been linked with bigger clubs than us. These include Edin Dzeko of Wolfsburg (Never going to happen!), Mark Janko from Salzburg, Brandao and Niang from Marseille and Vebad Ibisevic from Hoffenheim. The current rumour that fits into neither category is a proposed £750 bid for Fulham’s Paul Konchesky.
I wouldn’t be surprised if none of these players arrived in January especially if they are at clubs that are still active in European competitions. January is not the best time to buy as the best players are rarely available at the best prices. Also as we are doing well in the league at the moment the necessity to panic buy is not there. We just need to strengthen in a few key areas. But which ones? Cast your vote in the poll to the right.
In our last poll the majority of voters were optimistic about our survival and 35% voted that they always thought we would be OK even under the old board.
