Twenty Points at Christmas

For as long as the league has been in operation twenty points at Christmas has been the marker that indicates whether a side will stay up. That of course assumes that forty points are required at the end of the season but in most years that has not been the case. Often thirty six points is enough. However it’s still a good target to aim for and with our upcoming fixtures one that is very achievable. So far we’ve been averaging a point a game despite three-quarters of our games being against top half sides. Our next six games are all against sides currently in the bottom half of the table. They are,

Fulham, West Ham and Blackburn at home.

Wolves, Wigan and Everton away.

Can we get eight points from that lot. I would think so but it would be very Blues to slip up against the lesser sides after having done so well against Man City and Liverpool. In our last Premiership campaign we got more points against Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham than we did against Derby, Fulham and Reading!

Obviously the home games are key and we should be targeting two wins there but that game at Molineux is huge. By the time the game kicks off Wolves will probably be 19th and a few points adrift of safety (They’re next game is at Stamford Bridge) so will be desperate for the three points. A draw would be a great result for us and I would take that at Wigan six days later. Everton away will depend on which Everton turns up and who they have fit but I wouldn’t bank on us getting anything there.

So seven points at home and two away will give us twenty-one at Christmas and a great platform to push on in the the new year, hopefully with a few quality additions. Is that being too optimistic or do you think that we can get more than that?

What does everybody else think?
