Blues vs Rochdale – Brief post match thoughts

So when will we ever win a game by more than one goal!  It’s job done but it was far from comfortable.  Rochdale played very well and should be given a lot of credit for giving us a game.  We were very fortunate with the penalty award which was exceedingly harsh.  We started the second half well and should have put the game away but got to casual and allowed Rochdale back in.  Positives from this game were

– Matt Derbyshire looks good.

– Nathan Redmond was very bright on his debut and showed good confidence.

– Seb Larsson carried on his good early season form.

Negatives were

– We outplayed by a League one team for a good portion of the game.

– Valles didn’t impress and I had heard good things about him.

All in all the important thing is that we are in the 3rd round draw.  Let’s hope for a home tie and to avoid Chelsea.

  1. Not an impressive performance, but we won and once AGAIN we came from behind.

Good move for the 3rd goal. I agree with Mike, Valles was pants, people have been saying he’s good.

The other positive was a home draw – let’s hope we get another on saturday.

  2. What a strange evening. Chucked it down all night, there was nobody there, a five goal game, coming from behind, dubious penalty, Blues scoring 3, edgy last 10 minutes, great debut from Redmond and then Villa get stuffed at home. Then why did I walk away unispired and feeling like we had lost????
Typical Blues I suppose, made hard work of the game. We were strolling at 3-1 up thanks to an inspired Larsson and should have gone up a gear and put in another couple. Then we started passing the ball around and messing about at the back, suddenly they pull a goal back and we are sitting on the edge of our seats wondering about a possible replay. Very frustrating.
Valles looked a little lost, Murphy was consistently out of position, Bowyer ran the midfield and I didn’t think that Michel played too badly, although not a choice for a starting 11.
I think my only real moan apart from the static defending at times was that Zigic didn’t get a full run out. I know Alex is edging him in slowly to adapt to the Prem but this was a perfect opportunity to give him some much needed match time. He looked a bit lost up front and not in touch with his team mates. At the end of the day we paid £6m for a European international striker, he should be starting every game. IMO that is the only way he is going to get up to speed both with the Prem and his team mates. Lets start him with Derbyshire, after all we have just got these guys as we were lacking in the striker department and our biggest signing of the summer is not playing?? Again all very frustrating.
Oh well, I suppose it was only a R2 cup game against lowly opposition but then we are a Premier League team and should be polisihing off these types of teams by 3 or 4 goals.
I just hope we start to pick up in the league and stop letting in early goals and having to fight back. At least we are scoring now, 7 in 3 is pretty good but only one of those from a striker and we have let 5 in. I think our stating 11 is a match for any team in the league.
    Come on you Blue Boys!!!!!!
