Leeds Utd v Birmingham City Brief Post Match Thoughts & Zigic the Destroyer

He has received loads of stick since arriving at the club, however he has popped up with important goals. Quarter final of the Carling Cup v Villa, the 1st in the final v Arsenal and the odd league goal when we’ve needed it – but tonight the big lump just went mad!

There have been signs of improvement for the big man this season. He has shown more composure with his feet, he has won headers and made a complete nuisance of himself in the box – but tonight it all came together.

However, things could have been so different. Leeds started the game like a team possessed. They had 3 clear cut chances in the opening minutes and were unfortunate not to score. However on 20 minutes they got what they deserved, when McCormack put Leeds 1 up.

This sprung Blues into life and they started to take charge and deserved to be level when Zigic equalised on the half hour. However, no one in that ground had any idea of what would happen in the 2nd half. At half time it seemed a finely balanced game which could have gone either way, although – if anything – Leeds were the better side.

The 2nd started like the first with Leeds making the early play, however everything changed when the big man completed his hatrick in 3 minutes. His 2nd came on the hour and 3 minutes later made it 3-1. Leeds were reeling and Blues put the game beyond them when Zigic completed his double brace, his hatrick plus 1 on the 68th minute. Twitter went ballistic and #Zigic is now trending!

Blues saw out the remainder of the game easily and with West Ham getting beaten by Ipswich and Southampton drawing, means that Blues move up to 4th just 5 points behind Southampton (2nd) with a game in hand AND the South Coast side are the next visitors to St Andrews!

Blues’ goal difference is now +19 just 1 behind Southampton and we’ve now scored 20 goals in our last 6 games.

This side just don’t know how to lose so it seems, when you think we’ve been playing 2 matches a week most weeks – our achievement so far has been amazing. CH surely has to get January’s Manager of the Month – and hopefully we will continue on our run this time rather than having a dip like we did last time he won it!

  1. We scored four from six attempts on target. In November and December we often had ten attempts and scored one. That’s the difference.

  2. Great result, and year to date the season is going much better than i had hoped for at the beginning of the season!! As for Zigic, about 12 months ago a large chunk of Bluenoses couldn’t wait to get rid of him. If he keeps getting 4 (or even 2 or 3) away, esp against promotion rivals, then from my point of view he can stay as long as he wants!!! KRO from NZ

  3. Zigic has finally come into form, and showed why he was worth his price. Perfect timing. If he stays injury free, he’ll have 20 goals this season. KRO.

  4. 12 months ago we wanted rid? 24 hours ago id have been happy if he’d gone (provided someone else came in of course)!! But what a difference a day makes!!

  5. Be interesting when we (Southampton) come up to your place next week. Our second half performance was superb last night, and we are getting players back. Not many people outside the club realise from mid December to mid Jan we have been missing 5 or 6 first team players each week.

I know Davies has been superb at the back for you (As has the whole defence tbf), but I can see there being plenty of goals on Saturday. Sharp and Lambert will start up top with with Lallana and Puncheon/Guly out wide. Add to the fact our full backs are shakey and up against Burke and Murphy, can see them having plenty of joy

  6. Like our good run, your bad run has to come to an end. Obviously we hope it’s the game after Saturday – but it’ll be a great game!

  7. Good evening Leeds fan coming in piece, Kev invited me to give my thoughts and I did the Leeds fans piece yesterday.

Right back to last night. Well for a start the first 35 minutes of the game were probably the best we’ve been all season, whether you’ve come up against better or not we were much better. We should have scored three or four easy chances, and it felt like you couldn’t handle our early start. Becchio missed two sitters, Ross finally scored, Snoddy missed a few and I always felt you would punish us. It usually happens, in the past few years when we’ve been scored and made mistakes the other teams have taken advantage, at this level you can’t do it.

I won’t go into too much detail about everything and bore you all. All your goals were examples of simple good build up play by yourselves, mixed with some shambolic defending from us. At set-pieces (I dunno if you noticed) but we had a right-back who is 18 and about 5ft 5 marking Zigic. Tactics at its worst. All four goals could have been stopped…or should I say made harder with tighter marking and better closing down. Having said that the big man finished them with ease, all the crosses found him but he still put them away.

I said to Kev earlier that you are really really well organised. One of the best I’ve seen at ER this season, we helped you by not taking our chances but you stayed strong and kept fighting back. One thing I noticed from the Kop, was the width you play with. Burke was hugging the touchline and making Aidy White look slow (let me tell you he really isn’t slow). Davies was impressive at the back, and your keeper made a brilliant finger tip save which could have drawn us level and maybe the momentum back in our favour.

I like Hughton and think under him you have a chance to go up. You’ve lost a few players but still possess the quality to reach the Premier League in my opinion. All the best for the season, pretty depressing at moment being a Leeds fan with Ken ruining the club.

  8. Cheers Tom I appreciate the willingness to post a comment after what must have been a disappointing result for you guys.

This side will keep going right up to the final whistle, and opposition who think they have the job done will get punished.

It must have been a frustrating number of years for Leeds, and a club of that stature should be doing better.

Hope the rest of the season is better for you.
