I was transported into a timewarp last night.
Remember black and white television? Remember Muffin the Mule (before the RSPCA said that act was illegal!)? Remember when Birmingham City beat Aston Villa on a regular basis?
Last night, it was interesting to see Sebastian Larsson once more pit his wits against the bearded behemoth that is Olof Mellberg! Except this time it wasn’t Blues versus Villa, despite the increasingly common sight of Jack Butland on the bench, Dave Watson on the touchline and Joe Hart in goal.
Fast forward ten years or so, and it’s England versus Sweden, and Larsson is cheering the goals of his former ‘arch-enemy’ as it looked like Roy Hodgson’s England were going to be put to the sword. The lions being eaten by the Christiansson’s or something!
Mellberg’s goal was later adjudged to have been an own goal by Glenn Johnson, where have I seen the phrase own-goal with the word Mellberg before?
I knew his face was familiar.
Wasn’t it great to see the smile wiped off Ibrahimovich’s face?
Milner may need to be – ahem – rested – to allow Walcott to start, and I think Young’s theatrics can be given a ‘Razzy’ to allow Rooney to return up front, but overall, I think England acquitted themselves well. Hodgson continues to hold on to his unbeaten record, and long may it continue. Bring on the Ukraine!
I’ll leave you with this great comment from the Joys and Sorrows forum…

“IKEA, ABBA, Roxette, Volvo, Mellberg, smug Swedish newspapers, Ibrahimovic, Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Freddy Lindgren… your boys took one hell of a beating”
Keep Right On England (Jack Butland and Dave Watson in particular, and Joe Hart, too!)
