Reading v Birmingham City Post Match Thoughts
January 3, 2018 Blues News

Although Baz was at the game last night, because of work commitments he has been unable to do a view from the south for last night. He will be back at the weekend though.

It’s amazing what a couple of wins can do. Although we are still in the bottom 3, things do feel a bit better. There is now a bit of belief that we might get something from a game and not just automatically lose. There have been the odd sign of improvement in recent games. We put up a decent performance against Wolves despite losing, probably should have had a point against QPR and could have won against Sunderland.

From chatting with a couple of people who went last night, apparently we rarely looked in danger. Yes Stockdale had to make a few saves, but you would expect that when you are away from home. Both goals were well taken and once again I gather Boga, Maghoma and Gallagher played well.

It looks like a team is beginning to form. The question is, can we keep it going? Bolton have put a few wins together recently as have Burton, however they are both in reach in the table. I know Barnsley won their last match, but they haven’t been getting results recently and neither have Reading or Hull. After last night we are only 5 points behind Reading.

All our games are critical now, so what about January?

Due to FAC 3rd round, there are only 3 more league games this month. Derby at home will be a challenge after the cup game against Burton, but we have played ok against the better teams and I fancy our chances against them – but only because we are at home. The atmosphere should be good for that one. Then it is Preston away, we could get a point there, but they have done pretty well this season so wouldn’t be surprised at a defeat. The final game for the month is Sunderland at home. That one we MUST win. I’d take 6 points from those 3 games.

Last season by the FAC 3 weekend we had 35 points from 25 games. We now have 23 from 26. This looks like we have no chance of succeeding. However the 2nd half of the season we picked up only 18 points from the remaining 21 games, less than a point per game. That was what put us into trouble.

This season it is vital we now go on a decent run. There are 60 points to play for, we need at least 30 to be safe, so need to average 1.5 points per game. That is a challenge, however I feel a bit more optimistic about things than I did before, I certainly don’t feel like we will repeat last season’s fiasco.

Remember there is always at least one side that goes on a poor run too, and although we can’t depend on other teams dropping points, it is inevitable that they will.

Let’s hope these two wins are indeed the turning point in our season.

  1. Spot on Kev. A shame it took so long to get back to back wins. Let’s hope we can keep it going. Who’d have predicted Adams returning could be a quandary? 😉

  2. Excellent analysis Kev and once again, I’m sorry that I couldn’t oblige with my usual report but late midweek games are always difficult from that point of view. Apart from the first ten minutes of each half Blues were the better side last night. Reading were made to play in front of us and their plan to get it out wide and sling it in failed because of excellent performances from our rearguard. I was a bit worried early on when the home side were cutting passes between our fullbacks and respective centre backs which meant Grounds and Colin had to tuck in leaving space out wide on a wide pitch. Fortunately, Maghoma and Boga (eventually) tracked into the spaces left especially in the second half and eventually we exploited their frustration and carved out chances. In truth it could have been three or four had the outstanding Gallagher buried an excellent chance in the first half and Boga not had his goal bound effort blocked in the second. Also, Harlee Dean was so close with his header from a corner, missing by a whisker. Reading had their moments but deserved nothing from the game and Stockdale was there to save us on the odd occasion they did threaten. Overall a good performance; back to back wins and TWO goals in a game! Who’d have thought it? the stuff of dreams is this! 😀

  3. We’re gonna win the league! lol
