Garry Monk: Getting the Best Out of This Trio

After narrowly avoiding relegation last season, Blues have made an impressive start to the 2018-19 campaign under Garry Monk.

17 games into the season and only Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest have lost fewer games than us this season and both of those sides have invested heavily over the past couple of transfer windows.
The bookmakers still have us as outsiders to finish in the top six, with Bet365 currently pricing us at 9/2. This Bet365 sign up offer is the best for value and features as voted by OLBG’s betting experts for those who fancy a cheeky punt on us.

Despite a relatively poor defensive record, Monk is getting the best out of our attack. Results in recent weeks include a 3-1 win, 3-1 loss and a 3-3 draw. We certainly know where the back of the net is! Although we do need to address some of the basic mistakes we have made recently at the back.

Here are the three players in particular that have been excellent so far this season:

Che Adams
Eight goals and two assists in his 14 Championship starts this season, Garry Monk is getting the best out of the 22-year-old who had failed to score more than seven goals in a single season with us previously. Che Adams added a hat-trick to his tally in the 3-3 draw with Hull City this past weekend.
Adams has looked like a sharp and powerful striker that we’ve been missing from him over the past two seasons. Long may this form continue…

Lukas Jutkiewicz
Having only scored five goals in 35 Championship appearances as we struggled last season, Lukas Jutkiewicz has been on fire this campaign with nine in his first 17 starts. The former Everton youngster has never hit more than 12 goals in a single season – and that was in the Scottish Premier League. His form so far has rewarded him with the Championship player of the month for October, however it is us that have really benefited, as we have climbed up the table.

Jota
Jota has already laid on five assists in the Championship this season and found the back of the net once too. The Spaniard has flair, is a great play maker and likes to shoot from long range. His form has been much better this season.

Whilst we’re only four points off the playoff positions currently, any realistic hopes of a top six finish this season would rely on staying healthy and investing in January. We could certainly do with a couple of defensive reinforcements.

If Garry Monk can continue to get the best out of Adams and Jutkiewicz, and Jota continues to have the attacking impact – maybe we could make the playoffs this season. Our biggest issue is the lack of cover in key positions. As amazing as it would be, we are probably sat about where we will finish – mind you, stranger things have happened!
